The Stelvio Pass
A SPECIAL MOMENT
The highest paved road in Italy is a true engineering masterpiece, built in 1825 by order of Emperor Francis II of Austria to connect Milan and Vienna. Two centuries later, its breathtaking hairpins — 40 from the Bormio side and 48 from the Prato side — are a dream for cyclists around the world.
Reaching the summit of this legendary climb is an experience that words can barely describe. We’ve celebrated up there with guests beaming with joy, some even moved to tears, overwhelmed by the emotion, the effort and the pure satisfaction of conquering the Stelvio.
Day by day
DAY 1
Welcome to the Alps
DAY 1
Welcome to the Alps
Make sure your bike is perfectly fitted and ease into the rhythm of the week with a warm-up ride on quiet bike paths through the valley. The scenic climb to the stunning Cancano Lakes is the perfect teaser of the amazing rides ahead.
After the ride, unwind with an aperitivo and a cozy dinner at our favorite local spot. This is just the beginning.
TODAY’S TRIVIA
The final stretch to Cancano was only paved in October 2020 for a dramatic Giro d’Italia stage finish, won by Jai Hindley.
• DISTANCE: 40 km (25 mi)
• ELEVATION: 900 m (2700 ft)
• LIGHT OPTION: 30 km (20 mi) – 600 m (1900 ft)
DAY 2
Stelvio Pass, the King of The Alps
DAY 2
Stelvio Pass, the King of The Alps
Stelvio Pass, the highest paved road in Italy and a true cycling icon, is calling.
Today we’ll tackle both sides of this legendary climb in a spectacular loop of endless switchbacks, breathtaking views and pure satisfaction.
It’s a ride you’ll never forget. Savour every moment and get ready to raise a glass at dinner: you’ve earned it.
• DISTANCE: 100 km (65 mi)
• ELEVATION: 3000 m (10000 ft)
• LIGHT OPTION: 45 km (30 mi) – 1500 m (4900 ft)
TODAY’S TRIVIA
Stelvio marked the WWI frontline between Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. At high altitude, in extreme conditions, troops fought and dug trenches — some of which are still visible today.
DAY 3
Passo Gavia
DAY 3
Passo Gavia
Another day, another legend. Today it’s the mighty Passo Gavia, one of the Giro d’Italia’s most dramatic and unforgettable climbs.
The road winds higher and higher, cutting through rugged slopes and snow-capped ridges, opening up to that raw, almost lunar beauty that makes the Gavia feel like another world.
Take it steady, find your rhythm, and let the silence and vastness of these peaks carry you to the top.
Back in Bormio, reward yourself with a well-earned soak in the ancient Roman baths. Your legs will thank you.
• DISTANCE: 50 km (32 mi)
• ELEVATION: 1,400 m (4600 ft)
• LIGHT OPTION: 40 km (25 mi) – 900 m (2700 ft)
TODAY’S TRIVIA
According to local legend, Lago Nero and Lago Bianco, two lakes near the summit of Gavia, are the spirits of two lovers who, pursued and cornered, turned into lakes rather than be separated. On quiet nights, they still whisper to each other across the ridge, dreaming of the life they were denied.
DAY 4
Mortirolo & Wine
DAY 4
Mortirolo & Wine
Another day, another climb; and what a climb. Mortirolo, one of Europe’s toughest ascents, hits you with steep ramps and relentless gradients.
After the ritual photo at the summit, refuel with a delicious picnic before cruising along a spectacular ridge road into the terraced vineyards of Valtellina. There, we’ll dive into the world of viticoltura eroica, mountain winemaking at its finest, and finish with a private wine tasting at our favorite cellar. What a day. Cheers!
• DISTANCE: 110 km (65 mi)
• ELEVATION: 2300 m (7500 ft)
• LIGHT OPTION: 70 km (45 mi) – 900 m (2700 ft)
TODAY’S TRIVIA
Valtellina is Italy’s largest terraced wine region. The plots are so steep and small that all work is done by hand. That’s why Italians call it viticoltura eroica, or heroic winemaking. The terraces are supported by dry-stone walls called muretti which, if placed end to end, would stretch over 1,500 miles.
DAY 5
Passo Agueglio
DAY 5
Passo Agueglio
After four big days in a row, we suggest enjoying the light option and spinning flat along the Sentiero Valtellina, a peaceful bike path that winds beside the Adda River and along the shores of Lake Como. But if your legs are still craving climbs, we can detour up to Passo Agueglio, a lesser-known ascent that quickly becomes a favourite, with some of the most pristine and panoramic views over Lake Como.
Whatever route you choose to reach Varenna, take time to wander the alleys of this charming lakeside town, savour a gelato and settle in for a delicious dinner of lake specialties.
• DISTANCE: 70 km (45 mi)
• ELEVATION: 1400 m (4500 ft)
• LIGHT OPTION: 60 km (35 mi) – 150 m (500 ft)
TODAY’S TRIVIA
At 410 meters (1,345 feet), Lake Como is the fifth deepest lake in Europe. Its depth and glacial origin give it that signature blue-gray color and mirror-like stillness.
DAY 6
Il Lombardia
DAY 6
Il Lombardia
What better way to wrap up the week than by riding two of the most iconic climbs from the Giro di Lombardia? First, the Madonna del Ghisallo, home to the legendary cycling chapel, a true pilgrimage site for cyclists. Then comes Sormano, where you can choose between two routes: the infamous Muro di Sormano (1.7 km / 1.1 mi at a brutal 17% average!) or La Colma, a more gentle and scenic option that delivers amazing views and satisfaction at the summit. After this final effort, roll down toward Lake Como and toast the ride with a well-earned beer on the water.
Tired legs, full hearts…cheers to an unforgettable week on two wheels!
• DISTANCE: 50 km (30 mi)
• ELEVATION: 1300 m (4300 ft)
• LIGHT OPTION: 40 km (25 mi) – 800 m (2600 ft)
TODAY’S TRIVIA
Inside the Madonna del Ghisallo chapel, one relic stands out: a bicycle used by Gino Bartali during WWII, when he secretly helped save Jewish families by transporting documents hidden in its frame.
