HEAR FROM OUR GUESTS

I found Vago Cycling when I was looking for a bike tour in Abruzzo, the region from where my grandparents emigrated. I could not have been happier with the trip. Abruzzo is a magnificent region. The mountains and seashores are stunning. The accommodations were first class. The food was outstanding with farm-to-table, home-made regional specialties. Mattia and Giulia were excellent guides and provided an amazing small group personal experience.

Cooking with Giulia

A SPECIAL MOMENT

Perched on a hill with stunning views of the Majella mountains, Casal Centurione is home to Giulia—chef, host, and warm-hearted soul. Here, the kitchen becomes a stage for laughter, stories, and hands-on discovery. You’ll learn how to make traditional dishes like fiadoni and spaghetti alla chitarra in a genuine, relaxed atmosphere that feels more like a family gathering than a cooking class.

And the best part? Sitting down together to enjoy the feast you’ve just created. Unforgettable food, unforgettable company, unforgettable view.

Day by day

DAY 1

Welcome to Abruzzo
Cyclist enjoying the panoramic views over the Abruzzo hills and the Gran Sasso mountains during the e-bike tour

Our Abruzzo adventure begins in the “Golden Triangle,” a patchwork of rolling hills famous for producing Aprutino-Pescarese, one of Italy’s finest olive oils. After a gentle spin to get the legs moving, we’ll celebrate the start of the trip with a private wine tasting and a delicious farm-to-table dinner at our favorite local trattoria. Welcome to the wild heart of Italy!

• DISTANCE: 30 km (35 mi) • ELEVATION: 400 m (1,200 ft)

TODAY’S TRIVIA
In 2022, Abruzzo was named Wine Region of the Year by Wine Enthusiast Magazine. Once overlooked, the region is now gaining international recognition for its bold reds, crisp whites, and passionate new generation of winemakers.

DAY 2

Campo Imperatore
Breathtaking mountain landscape of Campo Imperatore, the high plateau of Abruzzo, during the E-Bike Tour

Today we’re heading to Campo Imperatore—a vast, high-altitude plateau surrounded by dramatic peaks and often called the Little Tibet.
Soak in the silence and raw beauty of this incredible landscape before rolling into Santo Stefano di Sessanio, a beautifully preserved hilltop village where time truly stands still. Wander its magical stone alleys and end the day with another unforgettable dinner of local delights.

• DISTANCE: 50 km (30 mi) • ELEVATION: 800 m (2,600 ft)

TODAY’S TRIVIA
At 2,912 meters (9,554 feet), Corno Grande is the highest peak in the Apennine mountain range.

DAY 3

Castles and Frescoes
Rocca Calascio castle standing above the Gran Sasso mountains, a highlight of the Abruzzo E-Bike Tou

The day begins with a beautiful hike, or a quick transfer, to Rocca Calascio, a dramatic stone fortress perched at 1,460 meters.
After visiting this magical castle, we’ll hop on the bike and cruise on quiet backroads to Bominaco. This little-known hamlet hides an absolute gem: the Oratorio di San Pellegrino, a 13th-century chapel known as the Abruzzo Sistine Chapel for its vividly frescoed walls.

A glass of wine by the pool and a farm-to-table dinner round off a day filled with beauty, stories, and timeless charm.

• DISTANCE: 40 km (25 mi) • ELEVATION: 700 m (2,300 ft)

TODAY’S TRIVIA
Rocca Calascio has starred on the big screen in several iconic films, including The Name of the Rose and Ladyhawke.

DAY 4

Hike and Cook
Homemade ravioli prepared during the cooking experience in Abruzzo, part of the Hike and Cook day

Time to give your cycling legs a break and activate your hiking muscles. Today we hike to the Eremo di San Bartolomeo in Legio, a Celestinian hermitage built into the mountainside, peaceful, dramatic, and in perfect harmony with its natural surroundings.

After the hike, we roll up our sleeves at Casal Centurione, where our friend Giulia will guide us through a hands-on cooking class sharing the secrets of traditional Abruzzese recipes just like nonna used to make.
A deliciously authentic experience awaits. Buon appetito!

• DISTANCE: 5 km (3 mi) • ELEVATION: 250 m (900 ft)

TODAY’S TRIVIA
Spaghetti alla chitarra, a classic Abruzzese pasta, are named after the traditional wooden tool used to cut them. Resembling a small guitar, the chitarra has thin metal wires that slice the dough into perfectly square strands when pressed through.

DAY 5

The Trabocchi Coast
Path leading to the Adriatic Sea and a traditional trabocco fishing hut on the Trabocchi Coast in Abruzzo

Our final ride through Abruzzo’s beauty takes us to the Ciclovia dei Trabocchi, a stunning coastal path built on a former railway line and dotted with trabocchi, the iconic wooden fishing huts perched above the sea.
A refreshing swim, a seaside aperitivo, and a farewell dinner featuring brodetto, the region’s signature seafood stew, sound like the perfect way to close this unforgettable adventure. Cheers!

• DISTANCE: 40 km (25 mi) • ELEVATION: 250 m (800 ft)

Today’s Trivia
Near Ortona, just above the Trabocchi Coast , the Moro River War Cemetery commemorates over 1,600 Allied soldiers who lost their lives in one of WWII’s fiercest battles in Italy, fought in Abruzzo in 1943.

DAY 6

A REAL GEM

Hidden in the hills of Bominaco, this small 13th-century chapel holds one of the most extraordinary fresco cycles in Italy. Every inch of its walls and ceiling is painted with vivid biblical scenes and starry skies, earning it the nickname “the Sistine Chapel of Abruzzo.”
